Creek Runs Red (The)

56 min.
Located in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, the town of Picher was once home to the world’s richest lead and zinc mining field. But since the area was declared a Superfund site in 1981, Picher’s residents have been forced to choose between preserving their image of the American dream and preserving their health. -- PBS
This film explores the complex ties between people and place - the EPA calls the town of Picher the most toxic place in America, but the Quapaw Tribe know it as their home. A federal buyout was offered in 2006, but the Quapaw people and other local advocacy groups remain committed to remediating the land.
